The importance of nespresso Eco Friendly capsules

Like many French people, you experience greater satisfaction using a Nespresso machine. However, there is a flip side: it produces a lot of waste. Fortunately, to remedy this, there are new Nespresso Eco Friendly capsules. Before discovering them however, it is important to talk about the recycling of aluminum, the most preferred material for the design of the capsules.

Is it possible to recycle aluminum pods?

Each year, 9 billion Nespresso capsules are sold worldwide. There is therefore reason to worry about waste management. This figure represents 40,000 tons annually, or about 4 Eiffel towers. Every minute, moreover, we throw away no less than 39,000 coffee capsules. However, 70% of them do not go through the recycling stage.

Aluminum will not be abandoned anytime soon, however, due to its ability to better preserve aromas. The realities of recycling it, however, can pose long-term problems for the planet.

What are the realities of recycling?

As we have seen, aluminum is a perfectly recyclable material. However, its recycling is not without constraints in terms of cost and energy expenditure, among others.

An expensive operation

Due to their very small dimensions, the insulation of the capsules in sorting centers which do not have "eddy current " machines is impossible. However, in France, there are only about twenty centers in possession of this means. There are therefore many capsules that cannot go through the recycling phase.

It will also be necessary to clean the capsules, knowing that in addition to aluminum, they are made, most of the time, of plastic and, of course, coffee. To ensure the degradation of these materials while preserving the aluminum, however, pyrolysis is an essential technology. Unfortunately, this one is not in France, the local centers reluctant to buy it because of its very high cost. The capsules will thus have to be transported to Germany before they are melted down in other countries of the old continent.

An energy-intensive operation

Travelling to other European countries is also an essential step for capsules collected from Nespresso collection points. A document from France Television notably revealed that 4 countries are essential for a complete recycling of these capsules:

  • Germany to convert bullion to foil
  • The Netherlands to clean the capsules
  • Italy for removing lacquer and melting capsules into ingots
  • Switzerland for a new transformation of aluminum into capsules

Each trip will therefore be the source of significant expenditure of energy, time and money.

Still a long way to go

Nespresso is becoming aware of the extent of its ecological footprints. This prompted it to create a treatment chain involving Ademe, Eco-Emballage and several players in the aluminum and waste industries. The initiative is already bearing fruit, but much remains to be done. Faced with the environmental emergency that aluminum capsules represent, however, other players have preferred to bring eco-friendly products into the world.

The compostable pod as an alternative

These new capsules are identifiable by the words "compostable" on their packaging. All you have to do is put them in an industrial compost for them to degrade. This is not the only characteristic that qualifies them as eco-friendly. There is also the fact that they contain, for the most part, organic coffee, mostly from fair trade.

In addition, there is a limitation to the necessary packaging and an FSC certification for cardboard, in general. It is therefore not surprising to know that these pods are already being emulated on the market, particularly among consumers attached to environmental values.

Manufacturing materials

Their qualification as bio-sourced capsules is enough to know what the Nespresso eco-friendly capsules are made with: natural materials whose degradation only takes a few months. These are materials designed in particular with starch or plant fibers such as corn, sugar cane or biodegradable plastic polymer.

Where can they be thrown away after use?

Most Nespresso eco friendly capsules can be industrially composted. However, there are more recent pods, which can be degraded into household compost.

To dispose of the eco friendly capsules, you have several options. The first is the organic waste bin, if you live in a city that collects industrial compost. The second is the household waste bin, if any. The third is your own compost, if you have any of course.

Which brands are already doing it?

Aware of the increasing number of consumers who care about the biodegradability of capsules, there are more and more brands offering aluminum-free pods. The first that comes to mind is San Marco. There is, however, a player who, since 2014, has banned this material from the manufacturing process of its capsules and who is also worth a detour: Dolce Gusto.

San Marco: an example in the field

What differentiates this brand from others is the non-use of individual sachets to preserve the freshness and tightness of its biocapsules. The latter are made up of renewable and hermetic organic matter up to 62%. The biodegradation of 95% of these capsules into water and CO2 is ensured after 2 months. To follow its ideals, however, the brand did not compromise on taste. It always guarantees, with its products, the authenticity of Italian coffee.

Dolce Gusto and its recyclable capsules

Dolce Gusto is a pioneer in Eco-friendly capsules. Admittedly, the brand does not yet offer biodegradable capsules, but its refillable capsule Capsigusto has been contributing to the reduction of plastic waste thrown away all over the planet for more than 6 years. It is not a consumable refillable capsule, but rather a stainless steel refillable capsule that cannot be the source of plastic waste spillage.

The others are recyclable dolce gusto capsules. Although they are made of plastic, the brand's association with TerraCycle helps to facilitate their recycling.

Your coming to this page is surely linked to a need to commit yourself even more to the preservation of the planet. It will therefore be up to you to choose between the eco-friendly Nespresso capsules available on the market to satisfy it. If you don't yet have the budget to buy biocompostable capsules, you can always fall back on the refillable ones from Dolce Gusto.
